My websites

My primary non-academic professional interest is in designing and building websites, both as a hobby and on real-world projects. Some of these are publically accessible, though my main interest is in "backend" processing and private systems.

Projects

QList & QNoms

Quakers The Quakers, a religious organisation whose meetings I attend regularly, have developed a system to securely store contact information about the various members, attenders and meetings all round the country.
It both offers individual meetings a system with which they can safely, consistently and reliably access important details about their participants, while permitting Friends House, the headquarters of the nationwide organisation Britain Yearly Meeting, as much up-to-date information about national Quakers as the meetings wish to provide.
I worked for three months in 2012 as the project's full-time programmer to complete the coding of the project, and to develop a side system, QNoms, to aid with the internal nominations process. Since then the project has gradually progressed, and I have been associated in a more or less active consultancy role.

Sumac

Sumac At the University of St Andrews, the CAPOD organisation provides a system whereby senior researchers can be paired up with younger ones to help them through the questions and difficulties of a career in academia. This system has taken to the Web and is being actively developed as a web tool.
My work on the project involved coding and planning in the early stages, before the project grew enough to need a full-time developer.

Societies

Societies The University's Students' Association has a huge number of "societies" - student groups dedicated to a variety of activities, from representing a nation or academic subject, through debating and dance, to watching films or putting on theatre shows. These can be hard to keep track of, and I spent the summer of 2011 developing a site to allow prospective or current members to access society information while facilitating the various administration processes - grant requests, audits, etc. - required for each.
When the entire yourunion.net site was redesigned, my minisite was replaced within the new system.

What a Thought!

The website you are currently visiting is also a creation of mine. It's a super-lightweight content management system (CMS), designed to allow quick and easy access and updates to a simple information site. It's easy (and free!) to deploy and to work on, and can be obtained by contacting me.

Side projects

Other than profesional projects, I've also done a bit of work on the Taizé website, notably writing the script to generate PDF versions of their daily readings.
I've also got my own personal utilities website, a general toolkit for everyday life. It's designed as a testing ground for my own projects, though it has various utilities (calendar, to-do list, etc.) which could be useful to others.
Last but definitely not least, I first learned my first web programming language - PHP, of course - while working in Bordeaux, France on the internal site of the École St Joseph de Tivoli, writing various utilities for the students and staff to organise and access communal tasks like file uploads.
